收藏: Xicana Edition
Designed by the amazing Xicana (pronounced CHEE or SHE-cana) artist, Jasmin Padilla (IG: @princessa_xicana), this Sista Of Liberty radiates Xicana (Mexican-American) culture, symbolism, and pride. By definition, “Xicana,” is a gender-neutral reference to the deeper meaning of being a Mexican born within America, as it encompasses a political identity, celebratory of indigenous ancestry and resistant to colonial pressures.
This Sista’s dress is ornately decorated with flowers and hummingbirds. The hummingbird, better known by its Aztec name “Huitzilopochthli,” also symbolizes the Aztec god of sun & war, and shows this Sista’s connection to her indigenous roots. The striped patterns and colors of her dress also reflect those seen on a traditional Mexican dress. This Sista’s dress also features monarch butterflies, which are omnipresent within Mexico and symbolize the beauty of migration. She rocks a traditional braided hairstyle, rooting from the Purépecha, an indigenous group in the region of Michoacán, Mexico. Her braids are garnished with purple ribbons, inspired by the feminist movement within Mexico that is known well by its unapologetic showcases of the color purple. This Sista’s headdress contains many flowers, including the cempasúchil (marigold) flower, significant to Día de Los Muertos (Day of the Dead), and serves as the foundation to her crown. Lastly, this Sista holds a tablet that reads, “migration is a human right,” a direct call against colonial efforts to reduce migration across the Mexican-American border.
This Sista stands in front of nopal (cacti), which are considered planta de vida (plant of life). The famous Mayan Wonder of the World, Chichén Itzá, also can be seen behind her, representing the rich history and advances to civilization brought by her people! Monarch butterflies in migration appear again, led by her torch, a symbol of liberty beyond borders.
A percentage of net proceeds made from SOL’s Xicana Edition sales will be donated to United We Dream (@unitedwedream), a youth-led organization that fights for justice and dignity for immigrants, as well as that helps alleviate fear for undocumented migrants through empowerment and leadership development.
