“My mother - she is always lifting on her shoulders more than she can carry. Always. I don’t want to romanticize struggle, especially when it comes to black women (especially when it comes to black mothers), but my mother has struggled for me, has been there for me and done things for me when I didn’t even realize she was doing them. She has allowed me to become more conscious of the labor that people carefully put into others, of the way that too many mothers carry weights in silence, and of the need to put labor, work, and love back into those who have put it into you.”
